Nerve conduction studies (NCV's) and electromyography
(EMG) are sometimes used to diagnose neuromuscular conditions,
such as radiculopathy (pinched nerve in neck or back), peripheral
or myopathy (ex. muscular dystrophy).
Common symptoms of neuromuscular disease:
- Neck pain
- Back pain
- Pain radiating into the shoulders, arms, hands and/or fingers
- Pain radiating into the hips, buttocks, legs, feet and/ or toes
- Numbness and tingling in the shoulder, arms, hands and/or fingers
- Numbness and tingling in the hips, buttocks, legs, feet and/or toes
- Arm, hand, leg, or foot weakness
- Elbow, wrist, ankle or foot pain.
How should a patient prepare for a nerve conduction test ( NCV ) and electromyography ( EMG )?
Bathe or shower before coming for your appointment. Do not use any body lotion before the appointment and inform the doctor if you are taking any medications.
How long does a nerve conduction test (NCV) and electromyography (EMG ) typically last?
A test typically lasts between thirty minutes to sixty minutes.
Who typically performs the nerve conduction test / NCV and electromyography test / EMG ?
The nerve conduction (NCV) portion of the test is performed by our board certified nerve conduction technologist and the electromyography (EMG) test is performed by one of our board certified neurologists.
